Matt was born in Toronto, raised in the Chicago suburbs, and spent childhood summers playing in the streets of Beijing. He studied abroad in Seville, Spain, as part of a complete cultural immersion program while at Vanderbilt.

On campus, Matt graduated summa cum laude and served in multiple leadership roles—including Musical Director—for the Melodores, internationally recognized as one of the top collegiate a cappella groups in the world. He also helped to found Diverso, a student-run film nonprofit that helps diverse students break into the entertainment industry. He spent his summers competing on a renowned Chinese singing show (SUPERBOY 2017) and interning at production companies and agencies in Hollywood, including MACRO and United Talent Agency. Matt also participated in Alternative Spring Break and danced in the annual cultural showcases put on by the Asian-American Student Association.
